Pendle Finance Explained: How to Lock In Fixed Crypto Yield in 2026

Learn how Pendle Finance splits yield-bearing crypto into PT and YT tokens so you can lock in fixed DeFi yield. Includes sUSDe examples, risks, and a simple PT vs YT guide for 2026.

Quick answer: Pendle splits a yield-bearing crypto asset into two tokens, a Principal Token (PT) and a Yield Token (YT). Buy PT at a discount if you want a fixed, known return. Hold YT if you want a leveraged bet on future yield. At points in 2026, secondary market coverage has put Pendle deposits above $8 billion, and pools tied to Ethena's sUSDe have been reported around 14.5% APY for fixed buyers (MEXC News; confirm live rates in the Pendle docs/app).

Rates and figures checked as of August 1, 2026. Yields, TVL, AUM, and loss totals below are research snapshots from the sources listed at the end of this article — not live or real-time market data. Always verify current numbers on the linked primary sources before acting.

How this guide was researched: Cross-checked against protocol documentation and the secondary research listed in Sources. CoinMarketBrief does not operate a live yield feed; figures are attributed estimates as of the check date above.

If you have ever wanted crypto yield to feel more like a bond, where you know the number and the date, Pendle is the closest thing DeFi has built. A lot of people bounce off it because the jargon sounds heavy. The core idea is not that complicated once you see the split.

The Problem Pendle Solves

Normal DeFi yield floats. You deposit into a lending pool or a staking derivative, and the APY moves week to week. Sometimes it rises. Sometimes it drops hard enough to wipe out months of gains. That makes planning tough.

Traditional finance solved this with bonds a long time ago. Pay a discounted price now. Get a fixed amount back later. Pendle brought that idea on-chain.

How Pendle Actually Works

Take a yield-bearing asset. Ethena's sUSDe is the example most people use right now. On its own, that asset just earns whatever the underlying strategy pays that week.

Deposit it into Pendle and it splits into two pieces:

PT (Principal Token)

PT is the right to redeem the underlying asset at maturity, at face value, with no yield attached.

Because PT does not carry the yield, it usually trades at a discount today. That discount is your fixed return.

Example path:

  1. Buy PT-sUSDe at a discount
  2. Hold to maturity
  3. Redeem at full value

The gap between what you paid and what you get back is a locked-in, known return. In spirit, it is close to a zero-coupon bond.

YT (Yield Token)

YT is the right to all future yield from the underlying asset, with no claim on the principal.

YT holders are betting that yield stays high or rises. If the underlying rate spikes, YT can pay off well relative to its cost. If yield collapses, YT can lose most of its value by maturity.

Every PT/YT pair has a maturity date. Buy and hold PT to maturity, and you know your return the day you buy, as long as the underlying protocol (Ethena, in the sUSDe case) does not fail or depeg before then.

Why Some Pendle Yields Have Looked So High

Pendle pools built around Ethena's sUSDe have, at times, been reported around 14.5% for fixed-rate PT buyers (MEXC News). That is far above a typical stablecoin savings rate — treat it as a snapshot, not a guarantee.

It is not free money. It is pay for real risk.

sUSDe generates yield through a delta-neutral setup: long spot, short perpetual futures, capture the funding rate. When funding rates are elevated, sUSDe's underlying yield rises. Pendle lets fixed-rate buyers lock that elevated rate before it cools off.

The flip side:

  • Funding rates can flip
  • Spot/perp mechanics can break under stress
  • sUSDe can depeg

Pendle does not remove Ethena's risk. It repackages that risk into PT and YT.

Step-by-Step: Lock In a Fixed Yield With Pendle

  1. Pick the underlying asset carefully. Your PT is only as safe as the yield source underneath it. Read up on Ethena, Lido, or whichever protocol generates the base yield before you chase the headline PT rate.
  2. Check the maturity date. Shorter maturities usually mean less time exposed to protocol risk. Longer maturities can lock a higher rate if you think current yields will fall.
  3. Buy PT at the market discount. You are not staking. You are buying a discounted claim on the underlying asset. Compare the discount with the implied APY shown in Pendle's interface.
  4. Hold to maturity for the fixed return, or sell early on the open market if you need liquidity. Early exit means the market price at that moment, not your locked-in rate.
  5. Do not treat the advertised fixed APY as risk-free. It is fixed relative to the underlying asset. If that asset loses value or depegs, your USD outcome can still hurt.

PT vs YT: Which One Fits Your Goal?

PT (Principal Token)YT (Yield Token)
Best forInvestors who want a known, fixed returnTraders betting yield rates will rise
Risk profileLower, if held to maturityHigher, value depends on future yield
Return typeLocked in at purchaseVariable, can be very high or near zero
Comparable toA discount bondA leveraged bet on interest rates

If you are new to Pendle, start by understanding PT. YT is for people with a clear view on where yields are going.

Risk Assessment Before You Deposit

Underlying protocol risk. If Ethena, Lido, or the base-yield protocol fails or depegs, both PT and YT can lose value, even if Pendle's contracts work fine.

Smart contract risk. Pendle is a smart contract system. Audits and time in market help. They do not remove exploit risk.

Liquidity risk before maturity. Exiting PT or YT early depends on pool liquidity. Thin pools can mean worse prices.

Yield compression risk (YT). If funding rates or base yields fall faster than expected, YT can lose most of its value well before maturity.

FAQ: Pendle Finance Fixed Yield

Is Pendle's fixed yield actually guaranteed?

No. It is fixed relative to the underlying asset if you hold PT to maturity and the underlying protocol stays healthy. It is not a government-insured return.

What happens if I sell PT before maturity?

You sell at the market price. That price reflects time left to maturity and current yield expectations. You may get more or less than a clean accrual of your locked-in rate.

Is YT a good idea for beginners?

Usually no. YT is leveraged and time-sensitive. You need an active view on yields. PT is the cleaner entry point for most people.

Does Pendle custody my funds?

No. Pendle is non-custodial. You use your own wallet and interact with its contracts. That also means you need to verify you are using the real contract addresses.

What is the difference between Pendle PT and YT?

PT is the principal claim that can lock a fixed return when bought at a discount and held to maturity. YT is the yield claim and a bet on future rates.

Bottom Line

Pendle takes floating DeFi yield and splits it into something you can actually plan around. Buy PT if you want a bond-like fixed outcome. Buy YT if you want to trade the yield itself.

The headline rates around sUSDe look attractive for a reason: they price real risk. Read the underlying protocol first, match the maturity to your timeline, and never treat a "fixed" crypto yield as risk-free cash.
